What 388 drafted RBs reveal about talent, volume, and why the NFL stopped paying them.
388 running backs drafted 2008–2025, full PPR, plus a snap-level companion study (2016–2025: 1,001 player-seasons with 100+ snaps, every point attributed to a specific down).
Cumulative hit rate by draft round
Draft capital does not slope down evenly — it falls off two cliffs: a steep drop after Round 3, a flat step from Round 4 to 5, another drop after Round 5, and a flat floor across Rounds 6–7. Within each plateau the round barely matters for ceiling (Rounds 4–7 are statistically flat for top-12, p = 0.19), but mid Day 3 buys a real floor: a Round 4 back reaches RB3 35.6% of the time, a Round 6 back 10.0%.
The equality: once a back gets the ball, the round stops mattering

Among backs who clear a real audition (50+ carries), not one efficiency comparison is significant (every Holm-adjusted p between 0.44 and 1.0). A Day 3 back who earns carries does exactly as much with each touch as a first-rounder. The only separator is volume: 16.3 touches per game vs 7.2. The median first-rounder logs 1,065 career touches; the median Day 3 back, 74.
The one skill gap is receiving — and the one late signal is college receiving

College pass-catchers hit RB1 at 32.4% vs 9.7% — more than triple the rate. Backs who hit top-36 were on the field for 41.1% of team pass plays; backs who missed, 9.7%.
Median share of team pass plays on the field. Early picks are installed on passing downs; late picks have to take those snaps from someone — and college receiving production is the most reliable tool for winning them (college-to-NFL receiving transfer is loose, r = 0.27, so it's an opportunity signal, not a skill promise).
What a snap is worth, by down

All RB snaps 2016–2025, full PPR. Third-and-long has the highest target rate and the lowest touch rate of any down — that combination is the whole story. Third-and-short is statistically indistinguishable from an early down (p = 0.25).
Value index by position and down
Value index = share of points ÷ share of snaps. Third-and-long is the most valuable down in football for every position except running back, where it is the least valuable. RB is also the only position that beats its fair share on first down.

Where each tier's points come from
Elite seasons are the LEAST third-down dependent, not the most. RB1s draw 13.1% of points from third down; backs who never hit draw 17.9%. Roughly 87% of every tier-to-tier jump is built on first and second down.
Third-and-long is a passing down — almost entirely
On third-and-long, 78.8% of RB points come through the air, and rushing there has a value index of 0.234 — carries are nearly worthless. When a back IS involved on third down, the touch is worth ~35% more than an early-down touch.
Can a back be elite without third-down snaps? Yes.

Three regimes: with a 65%+ early-down role, third down is irrelevant. In a 50–65% role it genuinely helps (17.9% → 46.3%). Below 35%, nothing helps — 576 player-seasons and essentially zero RB1s. Every back with 65%+ early share and under 30% third share finished top-24 (17 for 17 — small cell).
40.5% of RB1 seasons and 52.5% of top-24 seasons came with the back on the field for under half his team's third downs. Only 9.9% and 24.0% managed that on early downs. Early-down deployment is 3–4.5× more powerful per unit of snap share.

Derrick Henry appears six times. 2021 Henry is the single best example in the study: fifth-lowest third-down share among 242 top-24 seasons and the highest PPG of any of them (24.16, listed in the top-24 table).

Zero of 66 third-down-specialist seasons finished as an RB1. Zero of 42 became three-down backs the following season. Third-down work predicts slightly LESS early-down work next year (−0.085, p = 0.01).
The claims, in one place
- 1.Third down is a low-value down for running backs, uniquely so. Value index 0.642 on third-and-long — the only position in football below 1.0 — against 1.476 for WRs, 1.372 for QBs, 1.189 for TEs.
- 2.Roughly 87% of every tier-to-tier PPG gap is built on first and second down.
- 3.A running back is uninvolved on 84–87% of third-and-long dropbacks, elite backs included.
- 4.When he IS involved on third down, the touch is worth about 35% more than an early-down touch — because third-down involvements are overwhelmingly targets, and a target is worth 2.67 carries.
- 5.On third-and-long, 78.78% of RB points come through the air. Rushing there has a value index of 0.234.
- 6.40.5% of RB1 seasons and 52.5% of top-24 seasons came with the back on the field for under half his team's third downs. Only 9.9% and 24.0% did so on early downs.
- 7.Early-down deployment is 3 to 4.5 times more powerful per unit of snap share than third-down deployment.
- 8.Third-down snap share carries no predictive information beyond overall snap share for next-season PPG (p = 0.918).

- 12.Third-down-tilted backs are the worst profile in the study: 5.4% RB1 rate across 313 player-seasons.
A running back touches the ball on roughly a quarter of his third-down snaps, versus half on first down. That non-use is what makes third down look worthless. But third-down involvements are almost all targets, and targets pay 2.7 times what carries do — so the rare third-down touch is the most valuable one he gets.
